I did not (and still do not) know enough about music criticism* at the time, but in hindsight my B-i-L's Steely Dan fandom was a big red flag. (* …despite being a musician/songwriter with plenty of music theory. I just never paid enough attention to existing trends/styles/lineages/histories.)
