Yesterday's BNEF report on LFP batteries costing just $59/kWh got me thinking about pumped hydro. I remember an NYT story years ago about a pumped hydro project in the Grand canyon that tribes opposed. The details I noted were that it was going to take over a decade to build and cost over $100/kWh.

We only get out of this through building lots of high quality, aspirational multi-family homes. The fight is about cultural desires and preferences as much as it's around density limits and building code. This piece from yesterday shows us how we need regulation to work in service of that outcome

Can't stop thinking about this. LA really is where the failure of our suburban housing system is evident. There's no widespread conservation of land preventing more homes from being built, we've literally built houses everywhere that the mountains would allow. And it's not enough...

I will harp on the housing crisis over and over again, but if Biden loses it's going to be because he got caught holding the bag when our national commitment to low density housing failed to work for an entire generation

yes but i also think we shouldn't assume this sentiment solely belongs to gentrifying children of the suburbs! our cities are full of a lot of people who want suburban "drive everywhere for free" lifestyles for themselves

"I should be able to park my car for free wherever i want with no consequences" is how the suburbs are structured, and there's a lot of urban leftists who think the cities they live in should be suburbs but leftish

This chapter of The Power Broker is describing a neighborhood in the Bronx full of working class leftist Jews who are embracing integration as Black and Latino residents are moving in! I'm sure nothing bad will happen to them! Let me pull up Google Maps and see where the Cross Bronx Expressway is!

California will fail to reach its legally-required GHG reduction targets unless we reduce traffic by about a third. Fortunately, that is very, very possible to do: we just have to make our government actually want to do it.

Biden should drop the Fed independence charade and make some public comments pointing out that inflation is back to normal and American families need more affordable mortgages now. The next FOMC meeting on Sept 17-18 is too late for the cuts to happen

They'll get a lot of mileage explaining how Trump will make life worse for Americans, but the DNC is where the second term agenda can be presented to a watching audience. And if the Fed can deliver a much needed rate interest rate cut this summer it will really improve how people view this economy

There's only 2 things that matter for Biden for the next 2 months: 1. DNC 2. Federal Reserve FOMC meetings on July 30-31

It's a very bad idea to start a Presidential campaign with a debate, and it's an even worse idea to do that if you're going to have an awful performance to start the debate. But it's very clear that Biden is doing the work to get reelected now and I do expect things will start looking up for him

i guess, but to me the 2017/2019 elections there were way more about "do you want Jeremy Corbyn to be PM" rather than "should we still do Brexit". Corbyn himself was never really pro-Remain

This will be an interesting day to reflect on in the future. "Battery cells at $50/kWh means the technology to decarbonize most of road transport globally is already here, as opposed to in some future scenario." EVs are cheaper than ICE now. Today.

to his detriment, I believe Biden has viewed his job until 1.5 weeks ago as being President, with unpopular "tough decisions" rather than campaigning for President. I still have faith that the convention will feature a bold agenda for the second term and the polling looks better in 2 months

there's not going to be a resistance if Trump gets elected again. they'll find an opportunity to shoot protesters early on and nobody will decide it's worth risking death to do it anymore. the media orgs already are on board. real American dark ages stuff here, no idea how long it lasts

If we want to constitutionally amend the role of the Presidency so we can just nominate celebrities (or a certain former first lady) to the role of Head of State, then let's do that. Otherwise we have to be realistic with what we're demanding

We're not going to defeat rising fascism in this country if the electing a Democrat to the combined Head of State/Head of Government President role requires S-tier charismatic politicians (like Obama and Bill Clinton)

We're letting entire media cycles be driven by an effort to run a last-second elite-only primary campaign against an incumbent President who had a bad debate, is just starting to campaign for reelection, and is clearly still in a close race.

Regular people are going to remember how Trump emboldened the worst people in their families and communities by the time the election rolls around and it's going to be bad for Trump. Four years is just long enough for them to forget, but they'll remember quickly. I've been saying this for years.
