The origin of the word 'cat' is unknown. There are similar words in many related languages, such as French 'chat', Welsh 'cath', Polish 'kot', but also in unrelated languages, e.g. Arabic 'qiṭṭa' and Turkish 'kedi'. However, none of these languages can be identified as the source. Here's more:

The Arab stem is qitt قط for male, qitta قطة ( female cat) is derived from it.

Just like how humans did not domesticate cats, instead cats decided to live with us; the word for cat is not originally Indo-European, but decided to become a word in all languages.

Ik mis de overgang in betekenis van 'female cat' naar gewoon 'cat' of 'catlike' in het Middelnederlands. Aan de andere kant, sommige mensen gebruiken 'poes' als algemene term voor het dier en 'kat' als vrouwelijke tegenhanger van 'kater'. Anderen zien 'poes' uitsluitend als vrouwtjeskat. 1/2
