This is a very, VERY good policy. Similarly, a period of brief silence in a conversation to gather yourself and pull it together is generally better than immediately responding to someone being upsetting/irritating.

My parents have always "decaffed" tea by the "30 seconds and toss" rule but from what little hard data I can find it looks like the real impact of that is reducing the caffeine by around 50%. Certainly better than nothing but, as you say, a long way from "decaffeinated."
