It's frustrating because the time to make these choices is so long past us now. It's not like you go down to the candidate store and grab a new one off the shelf.

One of my favorite dumb video games things is that the world is called Thedas just because it's "The Dragon Age Setting"

Also, there was a real phenomenon of boomers who were more confident about their handiwork skills than was warranted. I am happy to own a house at all, but half of the work we had to do to make it livable was undoing poorly done DIY work from the previous owners.

It has a place in my heart because it was the first Trek I watched as it aired but it's mostly a bad show peppered through with a handful of the best single episodes of Trek ever made.

@austinwalker.bsky.social @robzacny.bsky.social on the topic of in-universe Star Wars pop culture, I learned recently that there's a mention in one of the encyclopedias of an ISB produced holodrama that is clearly a Star Trek analog about the valiant crew of a Star Destroyer

Honestly a diminished Brotherhood cosplaying their former glory and acting as a revanchist element trying to undo what good and progress has been made might actually work

A JAMA study of 15,000 Sweeds found that treating diagnosed ADHD patients with medication reduced mortality by 19% over a two-year period. Normal executive function does more than improve your grades. It makes you less likely to die.

The real, legitimate version of this is Thomas the Tank Engine which is absolutely an old British conservative ensuring kids know that class is real, chaos comes from not knowing your place in society and those who don't conform must not be tolerated

At the same time, they've evoked more of the feeling of playing the games than TLOU did. But TLOU was always chasing "cinematic" I'm impressed by how organically Fallout feels like it's creating moments that feel game-like without drawing attention to them.

The best episode of TLOU felt like a new story in that world versus a rehash of the game. Fallout was smart not to retread the (admittedly much weaker than TLOU) plots of the games

I feel like this ties into the generational divide around wanting to talk to a salesperson, where older generations get their information from people and like that interaction and younger ones find that inconvenient and inefficient

I don't like the idea of diagnosing a stranger but I will say that my takeaway from watching Oppenheimer was "the person who made this absolutely understands what it feels like to be on the spectrum" and that sort of unlocked a lot of Nolan's stuff for me.

The book Children of Time feels like the smarter version of this, where humans discover and have to interact with a planet of hyper-evolved spiders who absolutely act and think like spiders.

Great example. I think maybe this is why Avatar feels like lesser sci-fi, because it wants to deal with real life issues through sci-fi stand-ins, but it feels like easy mode when the thing is "don't you think we shouldn't genocide these very clearly sapient and human-like aliens?"

The more I think about this, the more I'm curious about a version of Avatar where the aliens and their world are actually, truly alien - and maybe even off-putting to human sensibilities. Make us empathize with gelatinous slug creatures or sentient gas clouds.

Like, one thing that stuck out to me is how they went to extreme lengths to make every creature feels like it has a shared evolution where they have 6 limbs and weird gills... except the Navi, because he needed them to be attractive to humans. They should have been 6 legged bug people.

That world is both too alien to feel "real" but too similar to seem distinct from reality and it leaves it in some uncanny valley place where nothing feels like it sticks with you

I legitimately think that is a big part of why Fleetwood Mac's Rumours has such staying power - the bass is way more in the mix and drives those songs.
