If you want us to be proud of our country, invest in its public services, pay its healthcare workers properly, clean up its waters, improve its public transport, make it work for people… Forcing 18yr olds into some half-baked National Service is just a nostalgia-soaked gimmick.

A gimmick that will likely backfire. The young won't vote for it. Their parents won't vote for it. Only the spiteful uncles and grandparents will consider voting for it "to teach them a lesson".

Perhaps if he had attended National Service, or indeed believed in it, he wouldn't have left our veterans in France. Or indeed on our streets - despite a "Veterans Minister" and his taxpayer's funded foul mouth wife!

We’re going nowhere until we address the elephant in the room. Tax! It’s a dirty word, but it needs to be fair, and those with the broadest shoulders should be paying their fair share, not hiding their money away. But we are a long way off that scenario as tax isn’t being mentioned in the GE run up.
