All Democratic nominees must be subject to a constant barrage of negative stories to properly vet them, a decision that obviously has no bearing on public opinion.

Alternatively, that’s already baked in at this point and the should-he-drop-out coverage stops after the convention and ballot deadlines pass. By contrast a new nominee could get But Her Emails coverage about some other topic through election day.

(Biden had a campaign podcast I really enjoyed and he would have like William Barber on and basically sounded like he was ready to do the FDR New Bill of Rights but anti-racist)

TBH I think it’s more that their orientation is maximum fuckery and continuing to let Dems flail. If they can knock a state out of contention, it’s a bonus.

He’s an excellent researcher. First learned about his work through foundational publications on voter files and how they impact turnout by race. Book is Hacking the Electorate, which sounds more menacing than it is in practice!

nothing says high levels of democratic trust like a donor-sponsored series of straw polls in limited locations (questions editors don't ask: how do you verify that the people showing up are registered voters, Dems, etc?)

Lot of reasons to appreciate Dr. Hayhoe’s work, but the commitment to studying her own communications work and sharing the results is so, so helpful.

Anyway, appreciate Zogby putting some actual thought into this, which is more than I can say for a lot of people who make six-figures plus armchair quarterbacking the Democratic Party.

Tapping the sign: The only two people in the Democratic Party with national level political legitimacy are Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Any process that doesn't have one or both of them top of ticket will struggle to enjoy widespread buy-in and will be subject to massive disinformation campaigns.

Fun challenge: try to find a list of all current DNC members or DNC members for your state and how they were elected. There's actually nothing mysterious about the process, but it's pretty in the weeds and the parties generally don't publicize any of it outside meetings.

James Zogby put out a proposal for selecting a new nominee and it's quite clarifying to see something on paper.

- Start with ~400 DNC members, 98% of whom voters have never heard of.
- TV debates! Exciting!
- Biden delegates do roll call vote(s) at the convention

1. Biden steps down. 2. No longer a candidate, baseline polarization against Biden decreases and his poll numbers go up. 3. Biden is now the strongest candidate to take on Trump.

FWIW, this is in response to the prospect of Biden stepping down and someone else -- not Harris -- getting the nomination. He says, "I wan this ticket to continue to be Biden / Harris."

Consistent with what he was saying for past several days, imo.

One of the absolute funniest things in the 2020 primary was watching terminally online Sanders supporters go from M4A, climate and labor policy appeals to gritting their teeth and kayfabing "Hey, he'll beat Trump! He's Mr. Electable!"

NYT news editors should assign some political reporters to cover why the NYT opinion editors haven't been able to bully Joe Biden off the ticket yet. Is their messaging off? Did they not reach out to key constituencies? Should they have commissioned some polls and focus groups first?

Political punditry has trained many news-attentive people to engage in media and messaging criticism rather than substance. And it's easier to do so because we all use language so feel qualified on some level to speculate. Often think of political scientist Eitan Hersh's term: "political hobbyism."

I don't think you can say anything credible on this short of a time frame that secures widespread democratic legitimacy. Or to put it another way, a party strong enough to do a switcharooni process four months out isn't running coinflips against Trump to begin with.

Worst version of this argument is saying "use a good process and not a bad one! tee hee!" and the best version I've seen is Klein doing deep dives on how the process USED to work. Nothing I've seen is forward looking or creative.
