Which came in useful 20 years later when a US publisher decided those clauses magically gave them backlist ebook rights and went right ahead. Told authors objecting to lawyer up and argue at their own expense. I was able to point to my clause (intended to stop any possible video games rights grab)

I was there in the room for the universally horrified intake of breath and the absolute silence waiting for the lawyers to respond... This is why I insisted my early contracts allowing electronic transmission of mss had a clause added specifying this was not a licence for any multimedia product 1/2

Back in early 2000s, at a SoA contracts seminar Q&A. Chap had signed away all rights to his novel for £5k. 'Publisher' binned the book and sold characters, plot, scenario to a games company for £50k, author entitled to £0. Chap asked panel what he could do. Ashen-faced lawyers said 'Nothing at all'.

Texas is subsidizing 10 billion dollars for new fossil fuel power plants specifically because of AI data centers. Imagine if they just subsidized artists and journalists and other workers instead. What a world that would be :(

Last summer I had to get a scan at a cancer center (not for me that’s just where the scan equipment was) and no one was masked even tho there were signs EVERYWHERE saying to do so. I wrote to the company to complain and they promptly took that signage down.
