Do you have a paper on circulation of Jewish texts (or a Jewish text) in the early modern period that you would like to present at the Renaissance Society Conference next March in Boston? Send us your proposal: www.rsa.org/forms/FormRe...

Methodologically, this doesn't have to be limited to Jewish texts but we thought for coherence we would keep to texts in Jewish languages. But if you have ideas for a paper about non-Latin, non-European vernaculars, let's talk.

Yes, just a quick reminder that finding a new copy/edition/manuscript/fragment of a known text is important but it's not the same as finding an unknown literary work. The article makes this clear, but the headline is a little misleading.

For some reasons my bluesky feed this morning is mainly two conversations: 1) humanists reposting an article from last August about a lack of humanities research funding and 2 2) Baltimoreans posting about rats.

Who are you, my fellow academics, who send in letters of reference in Word instead of PDF? And what is up with a filename that doesn't contain your name or the candidates name? Are you related to the students who turn in a paper online in Pages format and/or with the title "Paper"?

My "Religion, Book, and Beyond" students typeset and printed polemical titles for their own projected Reformation of Pitt 2024. (One student said we were printing Festivus mottos). I got the idea from Rachel Kranson's activity she discussed here. ingeveb.org/pedagogy/mak...

From Clifford Ando, a distinguished classics professor, comes this extraordinarily clear analysis of how Chicago has changed itself through risk taking and policy shifts. He talks a lot about the debt loads and presidential compensation, understandably, but I want to focus on a few excerpts. /2

Too many hot takes and shallow memes about Israel/Palestine conflict out there. Too much anger. Too much cleverness. Not enough room for the stories of the humans who interact and love. Some, like this one, are very sad: jewishcurrents.org/remembering-...

It feels more academic than twitter thus far. But also the format makes me keep feeling like I am stumbling into conversations in the middle. (Which is basically how I awkwardly navigate parties and receptions.)

Somehow in my head this is correlated with a lot of other stuff, like not knowing that on a street without sidewalks, you walk facing traffic or not waiting for the people in the elevator or subway car to get out first. Feels like some kind of erosion of "functioning in society 101" knowledge.

May her memory be a blessing. Her work and her life was inspiring to me as it was too so many. An unbelievably dedicated intellectual interlocutor to colleagues junior and senior. Loved watching her take copious notes no matter the topic of a lecture & then ask perceptive and constructive questions.
