For a while now I have had this icky feeling that a lot of our use of AI is us just using it to find examples to show each other how bad AI is and TBH I think we should probably all stop doing that cause excessive energy consumption doesn't differentiate between real use and joke use. 😬

I put an ENTIRELY groan-worthy joke in my last MS and was delighted when my editor basically said, "This is TERRIBLE and I love it."

I don't usually find one-off "I hate that" or "I love that" statements of the kind off-putting, but an entire dataset? Yeesh. Can't do it.

I can't even look at that. My brain will go entirely hamster wheel the next time I have to write one.

Come on, American distributors. I will watch the shit out of this (it's being shopped outside of Canada, according to the article).

I'm just an author/reader/person standing in front of a book promotion event's website ASKING THEM TO PUT THE FUCKING ADDRESS OF THE EVENT SOMEWHERE WHERE A HUMAN CAN FUCKING FIND IT.
Fuck. Not even the city is listed. This is EMBARRASSING.

Was just going to check in on you because between the promotion and some other stuff it's been busy over here and I hadn't seen you.
People. Ugh.

Catcher in the Rye without the self-awareness, which is a whole helluva thing, since that wasn't Holden's leading characteristic by a mile.

That main character had to be one of the least worthwhile characters I've ever read about. Vapid yet morally superior, a doormat and a brat. Given a much-wanted opportunity she both squanders and resents her parents for.
I mean adolescence isn't pretty, but that character was a goblin.

It was yours.

Have I ever told you how much I loathed her debut? Like flames on the side of my face hated. And this was wayyy before she started slagging off romance and then profiting from it.

But still a lot of post-it notes.
Since I never mention the titles of the books S&E talk about, I'm going to have those noted on individual post-its in the back cover, with another post-it covering them so they can guess as they read and see if they're right without spoilers.

When I last did it, it involved a lot of post-it notes. This time, I've ordered some special pens (come on, pens) that have a fine tip on one end and a pattern roller on the other. I intend to use the pattern roller to indicate the passage I'm referring to and be brave and do marginalia more.

The people who don't have their boots on the ground but do have the checkbooks are constantly being told by "very serious people" that we're obsolete. It trickles down to a certain (understandably) anxious subset of those of us who do have boots on the ground.
I hate it.

I have very little hope in a "this is wrong" face turn. But the "people hate us going on about trans people and think it's weird as fuck that we keep doing it" has been staring Tories, the GOP and Australian rightists in the face for the past ten years. Admittedly, they've still not clocked it yet!

Newsletter: Goldman Sachs has called BS on Generative AI, and I believe that it's time that everybody follows suit - generative AI is unreliable, unsustainable, requires an entire rebuild of America's power grid, and is most decidedly not the future.
