One of my favorite archive finds. A cartoon from the mid 1990s most likely.

As a northwesterner (from Marysville) I have to explain often that folks don't have AC. I remember my Arizonan father putting in a window AC unit when I was 13-14 (around 1994) and being so confused as to what it was.

Just read a blurb from the early 1980s about a parent objecting to Huck Finn, after her kid, the only Black student in the class, was made to read Jim's lines because he "had the right voice for it." I mean ... fuck.

As a prof I do my best to mention this stuff and other "shit I didn't know as a first gen student" kind of things when I can and my classes of a lot of first gen students seem to appreciate it. Humiliating students is a bizarre idea.

Reminds me of being in a law school housing policy class and a student announcing that $130K in 2005 was barely living wage. Also a friend wondered why I didn't volunteer that my family lived on Section 8 housing support and I just exclaimed "are you fucking kidding me."

OK, this 1983 challenge to Breaking Up by Norma Kline may perfectly sum up challengers in the 1980s (and frankly today.) I just spent time transcribing the entire list because I'm pretty sure I will use ever single point in this chapter. The only thing missing is satanic panic.

The benefit of a desert. It may be hot a lot of the time but no humidity. And now that our AC is fixed after two weeks things are pleasant again.

In 1989 Oregon, a school board voted to remove James Baldwin's classic from the high school library. They wouldn't even put it on a restricted shelf (an absurd idea) because it could be passed around. Imagine being afraid your kid might be shown a James Baldwin book at lunch.

Working on notes about the development of intellectual freedom principles in libraries for this chapter and recalled a great archive find: a 1962 survey of reasons why libraries did not acquire Tropic of Cancer. One, on another page, said their patrons were unsophisticated readers.

So if Biden ordered the military to assassinate the 6 Republican justices he would be immune for official acts. At least that's how I read things. I can't believe I'll have to teach this shit.

Anyone want to guess what book it was. I'll help out: this is from 1986 North Carolina and the book is what most would consider to be a 20th century classic.

Also, I'm happy to Zoom in for folks who want to use this and feel that I could be useful. (I'm also happy to visit in person though that's more complicated. But I'm cheap, especially if your archives have any gay student group stuff I can collect).

Me yesterday: Yes, it's nice to have that paper out, now almost all of my working papers are done and I can focus on writing this book (or books maybe) instead.
Me today: Maybe I should write a paper on current book banning lawsuits ...

The both siderism needs of some are amazing. Reading a book on 80s book battles that is just full of conservative anti education but then it drops one reference to Huck Finn challenged because of N word and says “some liberals do it too! So fucking stupid.

These holidays are always weird for me. I don’t have some kind of massive separation or anything with my dad, more of just a mutual disinterest. It sort of fascinates me how close some folks are with their parents but in a way that an alien culture would be interesting.

Got home 2.5 weeks ago and felt excited to write and turns out I was. Just wrapped a rough draft of a chapter on literary obscenity. Comes in now at 14,100 words and forty pages. I have banned myself reading it for at least another month to work on drafting the next two chapters.
