Also, a reminder that if you are provided “unlimited” vacation to use it.
They give that because studies show you will use less vacation time that way than if you’re given a hard limit which most people will use.
Try to take care of yourselves bc the companies will not.
The best version I’ve heard is unlimited with a minimum time off requirement.
Currently on an “unlimited” version myself, and the good part is not stressing about numbers if I need a sick day. But it makes a huge difference that managers are taking 1-2 weeks at a time, so other people “can” too.
Yes! When I was a people manager in a company with “unlimited” PTO, I monitored time off quarterly and when members of my team weren’t taking enough time to recharge (at least one week a quarter), I would encourage them to take some time off. (I NEVER worried about people taking “too much” time.)
My friend took a job like that. The caveat was “if scheduling allows” and the result was… zero vacation. It’s like the hunger games but for vacation days. And senior people get priority. It’s a total scam.
It’s not just a trap because employees take less PTO when it’s “unlimited”… When PTO is not a limited, accrued amount, they don’t have to “pay out” your unused PTO when you leave the company. So you use less PTO while working for them AND then get no payoff for working more when you leave.
Yep. And I tell my team to USE the vacation days they have accrued. Nobody's gonna be celebrated as a hero for not taking those days off. It's a part of your compensation package, your salary of days off, if you will. USE THEM!
