The first movie was intended to be an all-audiences crowd pleaser. It was for kids but it was also intended to be nostalgic for adults (like him) remembering the pulp sci-fi of their youth. It wasn’t until Return of the Jedi that I think you could argue that it was truly intended primarily for kids
