Smut writing witch, feeder of many, mother to many creatures great and small. Did you read Jane Austen and thought it needed more sex, less heteronormativity, and witchcraft? a.co/d/h5MxSKh

Footnote: that’s far from the one and only reason the Church did as it did. But it was why it was possible for some otherwise good people in critical positions to disbelieve accusations when they came up the line.

I sometimes think about how wonderful it would be to have the Time and Energy to do a romance series much like DC does with its multiverse. Book 1, standard. Book 2: what if had kept that 2 am bizarre idea about her collecting spiders? Book 3: coffee shop AU

Just because the messenger hangs out with some evil people doesn’t mean they’re lying, or wrong. You’re allowed to ask questions. You’re not allowed to minimize very serious allegations by ad hominem.

Also, loudly refuting a fact because you don’t like who told you is not “waiting for further confirmation”. I could go on at length about how much the Catholic Church allowed abuse because such charges were often leveled against religious of all faiths by 20th C regimes.

I want to second what @courtneymilan.com has said. It’s one thing to have reservations about sourcing on a story. It is another thing to launch loudly into “This isn’t possible, he would never.”

Waiting to form a conclusion generally means sitting and waiting, not loudly narrating.

Oh I didn’t say most Dems believe it. I have no stats on that. I’m just surprised by how many I’m hearing it from. And it has nothing to do with the NYT comment moderation.

January sixth was a temper tantrum thrown by wealthy conservatives. It still had a death toll and it was still destabilizing.

This is definitely true, and arguably a big part of the issue is simply District that are way too large. None of our system was designed to function at 340 million

We cant eliminate 50% of the population and if 80% of people believe they are not represented, responding that “it’s their fault” is not a profitable way forward, nor does it consider the role Dem executives played in getting us here. One foundational case that allowed the Trump decision this week…

Yup. Theoretically we could win it. Looking at the way the last several hands played out I have no interest in risking a seat on our odds and our current performance.

The thing I’m hearing from The Wastes is how many Biden supporters feel deeply lied to. The entire system is a zero trust environment and the people who survive this are going to be those who can leverage that by actually building trust.

Needs met. And yes, the fault in that often lies with the GOP. But the perception of not being represented is real, even when it is misdirected. And it’s not always misdirected.

You’re missing my thrust here. The anxiety from both sides comes in part from a lack of representation of the entire majority. If white lower to middle class voters felt represented fairly Trump would have no ground. That doesn’t mean getting what they’re told to want, it means having basic rural…

We got here IN PART by tolerating massive expansion of the executive under 3 successive presidencies. And a lot of us ignored it when it was our guy doing that expansion because he was the good guy and the last guy did it too.

Absolutely. Gun control is another clear case where the vast majority supports one position and our reps won’t pursue it. My point isn’t that “both sides do it!!” But that our political dysfunction goes beyond even this, in ways that are potentially catastrophic. Moreover —

Yes. And. The issue in this country is that almost every issue is so close to 50/50 that at this point, a sizeable chunk of people feel that is the case. But on opposite sides. And on many issues, they’re both right (on the representative democracy, not in the issue itself.)

Also, to anyone I know online or IRL; if I’m extra irascible it’s because I’m trying to figure out whether threatening my dad with half of his kids going no-contact will result in him actually getting a neuro workup. And then what I’ll do if and when it shows there’s no organic reason for his shit

If more comes forward I am more than willing to reassess and I’m certainly not coming to a conclusion right now. I’m a survivor who was raped 3-4 times a week from the ages of 14-16. I believe women. I distrust those with a long history of dehumanizing others.

This ruling is terrible and has awful consequences but ironically, presidential immunity isn’t the worst of it and it’s not novel. Again: Obama murdered US citizens and nobody went to jail.

But an illegal order remains illegal. If a mafia boss gets immunity in a deal with the feds, his orders still remain illegal and all those under him can and will still be prosecuted.

Watching people react to the immunity verdict so far has been the epitome of “white people panicking when they’re now potentially exposed to the scenarios everyone else has been living under.” Yes, it is terrible. Yes it is an escalation of bad shit. But it’s an escalation of existing habit.
