so often we've wanted to take some alow, meandering train ride for the joy of it and end up having to do geographical trigonometry trying to line up which plane to take to catch an uber for the 2 hour ride to the nearest train—but, by the time we figure it out, all our free time is exhausted!

And despite appearances, trains are VERY profitable in the US. But they're for freight. It takes a larger initiative to create a more profitable passenger train infrastructure in the US. It can be done.

I live in the (formerly) rural area outside what passes for the "urban center" of my city. There's been a boom over the past ten years and all the abandoned farms and former woods have been converted to developments & apartments. But everyone who moved in there works in the "urban center." (cont)

When I think about how many Fort Wayne neighborhoods are right there on the side of the tracks exclusively used by Norfolk Southern to haul crude oil thru, and how those neighborhoods USED to be connected to the now gentrified downtown by those same tracks running passenger trains...
