It’s weird that my dog was never scared of fireworks or thunderstorms (save one awful night while camping). She’d sleep like a rock through fireworks. She was wise and focused her fear on more important things, like seagull feathers, ceiling fans, cow statues, traffic pylons…

Working as a line cook in Toronto during Summerfest meant I’d arrive at 8, open for 9, and cook without a break until helping close at midnight. I showed up 15 minutes late one morning because, after a week of that, I needed some sleep. The owner looked at me and said “did your watch break?”

A lot of people also don’t realize that since our policies are mostly just watered down, delayed versions of US policies, that immigrating to Canada is actually really hard. Not openly hostile, like the US, but still harder than just moving a few clicks north of Vermont and refusing to leave.

There are a lot of toppings that, if I don't like it, I can just flick it off and go about my meal. Pineapple juice lingers on the pizza, even after you remove it. The visceral reaction, at least for me, is that if it's on my pizza, I can't escape it. Also, it's a no-stakes controversy.
