Hot take but congratulating someone on a pregnancy when you don't actually know whether they're happy about it or not is gross & insensitive, and prolly a relic of more explicitly patriarchal times when women were more explicitly expected to aspire to motherhood to the exclusion of anything else.

Some kids need blockers because they are undecided whether to take hormones. But because of gatekeeping delays, the majority of people on blockers under the present fucked-up system should probably have been taking gender-affirming hormones (which do suppress endogenous hormones enough) already. 2/2

Turns out it's η΅΅ζ–‡ε­— (η΅΅ = "e" meaning "picture", ζ–‡ = "mo" meaning "letter", ε­— = "ji" meaning "letter") and predates the internet entirely and is also used in Japanese to refer to pictographic scripts like Egyptian hieroglyphics, and the similarity in English to "emoticon" is a coincidence :o

...Huh. I always assumed "emoji" was a portmanteau of the English word "emotion" and the Japanese word "ji" meaning "letter" and came from the earlier English "emoticon", and that it would be written in Japanese as エヒ字 (ie, "emo" in katakana which is the script used for loan words, "ji").
