Noticing the frequency of bike lanes in my old Toronto neighbourhoods. Despite many concerns, they were economically successful for businesses. Locals on bikes shopped more often and spent more than people driving through in cars.

UNRWA provides essential services to the majority of Gaza's population. Israel is proposing to call that provision terrorism. The law would criminalise Palestinian health, education, housing, population registry, food - survival. That is as clear a statement of genocidal intent as I have heard.

A Gazan colleague had six members of his family killed one day in 2014, and then Israel killed three more on the day after. His hair turned grey while he continued working in an UNRWA shelter. Now his father has died, and he cannot find a grave in which to bury him. Ceasefire right now.

I also wrote quite a bit about UNRWA and its mandate in Still Lives - a memoir of four years of work in Gaza, including 2+ years with UNRWA. Happy to point you to lots of reading if you want. UNRWA serves Palestinians as one, dispersed, nation - that's the key.

It is the culmination of a long and visceral campaign. I wrote about it in Counterpunch in 2018, when Donald Trump did so much damage. This campaign is worth fighting again and again because UNRWA's unifying mandate is important.

Pity. UNRWA's Gaza schools were so good, notwithstanding crowded conditions. My team especially remembered the competition for UNRWA science prizes. Girls too; they were baffled by the Western stereotype that girls weren't good at science - nonsense! UNRWA uniforms were a real source of pride.

How can we speak to a holiday of liberation this year? It is not enough to say that our Jewish ancestors were liberated from oppression. The meaning of Passover is that we reject the oppression of one people by another.

The IDF is moving Israelis to a higher domestic defence readiness at 2300 hours. This reflects the horrible, approaching likelihood of a major armed response by Iran, and it distracts from the ghastly present certainty of starvation in Gaza. Netanyahu has so criminally much to answer for.

Every time Blinken and Biden talk about collaborating on Israel's Rafah offensive - not satisfied yet, still working on it, haven't seen enough detail - I see them standing in court while their words are replayed. They indict themselves by arming and now by co-planning a foreseeable war crime.

Ask Cambodians about four years of starvation, disease and random violence: a generation of people survived knowing deeply that they were utterly alone in the steps they took to live. For 17 years Gazans survived their ghettoisation with mutual aid: they survived together. 3/4

The failure of aid individualises survival. Food does not reach those who are alone, less mobile, too weak to fight. Networks of the powerful and the brutal improve one’s chances. Individuals who know foreigners, who can put up a gofundme, have a huge advantage. 2/4

When Israel obstructs the food, deters agencies and kills their workers, they cause death by starvation. They also wage a less-visible war. Agencies respond to collective needs. Without that, knowing that there is no food arriving, people must respond individually. 1/4
