I’m not sure if it’s the same there as here but markets do seem like a hard nut to crack. I don’t even apply to them because most are outdoors and with my health issues it just wouldn’t work. I know it’s disheartening but you will find your own path, something that works for you.

It’s honestly super weird. I know some people do it for money and status. Others I think feel so disconnected they are desperate. But yeah it’s like they forget all the generations after that ancestor that just married white Europeans lol

As for the harm, for one it’s teaching a history and culture to others that they don’t really know. They also often take advantage of jobs and scholarships that should be going to actual federal tribal members. The take resources away from people who need it.

I don’t know the details of all of them, but many have tried to get recognized and don’t meet the requirements because we are talking about mostly white Europeans with one ancestor from the 1800’s.

Truly. Mine was denied because a baby was illegitimate even though a grandmother wrote to the state trying to get her on the rolls. It was a very sad time and then the Trail of Tears hit. You can see how that pain affected my family for generations.

My mother and I were just talking about that. If you ask someone to name a tribe chances are good Cherokee is one they say. I’m not sure how that came to be. I’d love to know. It’s probably a combination of things.

No, this is a very good question because it can be complicated. I think in the case of people who have one ancestor from the 1800 and are mostly white European it’s either for money/benefits or a deep feeling of disconnectedness.

I’m not trying to call anyone out. I was recently reminded of a state tribe here in Georgia who are no more Cherokee than I am. One ancestor from the 1800 isn’t a claim. I’m proud of my heritage but I don’t claim to be Cherokee.

Did you know there are more than 200 groups that claim to be Cherokee? There are only 3 federally recognized tribes, the Eastern Band in NC, the Cherokee Nation in OK, the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in OK. State tribes don’t meet the requirements to be legitimate.
