For a supposed critique of American universities as the “entwined forces of narcissism and idealism run amok,” there is an astonishing amount of flowery, unclear language paired with shockingly little actual analysis or argument.

NYT completely misidentifying the "crisis of academia" (again). I shouldn't be surprised but, jesus christ, this is so lazy.

How are these two things in the top half of the NYT online front page. I can think of literally one thousand other more important things that readers could be pushed to learn about.

(2) cont… I love seeing students engage with materials and work hard to improve their critical reasoning skills. Though not perfectly linear, I saw a lot of improvement across the board in my class throughout the semester. Shoutout to students.

(2) Taught my first class as lead instructor and enjoyed it a lot. It was a weird structure with 60 students and no sections, so students had (for better or worse) to deal with me. Ultimately I think it created some really special connections with students even though it was a lot of work.

(1) Wrote my prospectus and successfully defended it yesterday. Lots of work ahead, but I like my project and feel very supported by my committee. Feels like progress and progress feels good.

Had lots of creative and funny memes from students but this one takes the cake for me because it’s so specific and obscure. Credit to Mac for hitting the perfect tone here:

Gave the last lecture today for my first semester as lead instructor for IPE @ UW-Madison. It was generally a blast and I had lots of very engaged students. Cheers to the end of the semester 🥃

In honor of Joe Manchin retiring, let’s remember the fact that he single-handedly ended the Child Tax Credit, one of the most effective anti-poverty pieces of legislation in recent history, because he thought parents would use that money for drugs.

Probably about equal with ABBA, and less than Prince. Which seems about right to me 😂. I might have to make the rest of the course a Motown education, though.

I won't claim to rival @mcopelov.bsky.social's "Definitive IPE Playlist" but we did do a mini "IPE Eras Tour" that is coming to an end today. Relieved to report I have lots of Prince fans in class, devastated to learn I had zero takers on Willie Nelson *OR* Motown.

I want everyone to take a moment today to think about how today's GDP report--which showed the economy grew at a whopping 4.9% rate last quarter--would have been covered under the previous administration.
