I’m now firmly of the opinion that a lot of the problems we’re facing in society right now could be cured by more art in schools, not less.

"Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men."--Martin Luther King, Jr. I'm not a huge fan of arguing with MLK. I think he might have gotten this one right.

At this point, in the US, I’d be stoked if we were reliably and effectively teaching kids to read. Like, that would be an improvement.

An art profesor of mine said we have classes for math and history and yet everyday we are bombarded by visuals, politics, and ads, and not taught the skills to decode their insidious nature.

Yes, the '80's push for "Basics" reduced all students options; and without grounding in humanities, how can we expect to produce good humans?

Art is also great therapy to express your emotions and thoughts in any shape, forms, and style you want. We all need that.

art and art history tbh. (art isn’t really separable from history anyway, which is a thing we keep seeming doomed to repeat.)

And music which teaches math, memorization, precision & beat. And theatre which teaches empathy, discipline, memorization & teamwork. Both emphasize performance before an audience, which teaches humility. Music, theatre & art reward with positive self-image.

Children who participate in music education programs throughout their time in school actually score better than their peers in the core subjects!! It’s been proven over and over. More importantly, they are more compassionate, thoughtful and, often, kinder than their peers. PUT MUSIC IN SCHOOLS!!!!

We also need more SCIENCE in schools, and more REAL HISTORY in schools. Frankly, those 2 seem to be the more urgent needs. But then again, I don't have kids in Louisiana schools.

The arts give us expressions of our humanity that help us become better humans, understand ourselves. We can't just study and calculate what we need. We have to create it. The arts shouldn't be an afterthought or something for a few. Music, fine arts, dance, theater, writing should all be included.

100% I'm on Team:Visual Arts, but I think creative arts should absolutely be part of education. Let people create and express themselves. It doesn't make for good workers, but it makes great people.

Also art shouldn’t be graded. I have a feeling that many tech bros may have turned out better people if their attempts at expression were praised earlier.
