This is great. Curious how to reconcile it with street level bureaucracies and org complexity literatures on contention and structural under resourcing. Great food for thought thanks!

Thank you for banging this drum; I often feel so alone in this perspective. The importance of systems is why I keep coming back to the mechanics of voting and taxation as being so important - plurality-winner voting, and how it stifles competition, is in large part why everything is as it is!

so "intent follows the bullet"? sorry, no. lots of things built into systems are themselves workarounds that solve one problem while creating another. evolution has produced lots of features that harm the organisms that have them, and that is certainly not its purpose.

Wow this is good! Fwiw, I’ve spent the last few years pondering what happened to the people in quasi-political leadership roles, many who started as goal oriented reformers…

I think - especially after reading @dsquareddigest.bsky.social The Unaccountability Machine - that this is a different understanding of Beer's maxim than Beer's own. You seem to say that the bad outcomes are intentional, while Beer would be dubious that large systems are intention in this sense?

This is something I think I have felt for a while now, but I never could have put it into words. Thanks for this, I will be thinking about it a lot.
