I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

Given that the NYT chose to publish this on July 4, I am announcing that it is now morally defensible to punch both nazis *and* (at risk of repeating myself) members of the New York Times Editorial Board.

As @emptywheel.bsky.social said, they published this “voting doesn’t matter” editorial on July Fourth.

Shame on them.

American independence was declared—and won—by people who gave a damn. And worked for what they won.

An aspiring dictator & convicted felon w history of treason may win the presidency. Profoundly corrupt SCOTUS justices undermined the constitution and gave him immunity from prosecution for past & future crimes. This is all political journalists should be writing about 24/7. We’re at the precipice.

I was one of many folks pushing the Biden transition project on SCOTUS reform That push resulted in Biden's "Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States" The 34 commission members submitted their 288 pg report to POTUS on 12/7/21 Then the White House did nothing with it...

And then they brought on some other jar of mayonnaise to say the SCOTUS ruling legalizing Watergate wasn’t the end of the world because future presidents will realize on their own that they shouldn’t throw their enemies into gulags.

Bluesky's apocablock makes being quote posted much less risky -- if you get QPed by an asshole and block them, their followers can't see your post, or even who posted it. So it's a lot more common here to QP positively -- because the QP dunk just gets you blocked -- and folks are more cool with it.

Signal for comms. Tor for browsing (doesn’t have to be all the time, but occasionally. Brave Browser has it built in these days.) Zcash for purchases, when possible. Encourage your local abortion support fund to adopt it for donations; financial surveillance can be incredibly dangerous.

Yes! This is an excellent demonstration of the politicization of the administrative state and overbroad authority that Roberts' ruling has made possible that *also* is basically just. Decent policy. Biden should do this. No doubt.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Under today’s immunity decision, Biden could order AG Garland to immediately prosecute Thomas and Alito for corruption and insurrection. (Official act). If Garland refuses, Biden can fire him and replace him with someone who will. (Official act) I would suggest Elie Mystal.

I'm reading the opinion and it says he enjoys absolute immunity regarding threats to fire the attorney general if they don't do what he wants. So, he could easily just say "investigate or prosecute my friends and you're fired" and he's 100% immune, right?

Sometimes it feels like nothing is changing: as if we’re climbing the tallest mountain in the world, and the summit is no closer than when we started. But if we stop for a minute and turn around and look back, we can see how far we’ve actually come. Progress is happening, step by step.

The very presence of the spoiler effect in the voting system means that you don’t get good candidates. Instead, you get hopeless vanity campaigns.

Also RCV is the second-worst option behind FPTP; I recommend checking out STAR voting (equal.vote) instead.

I really wish that the ire about that sort of thing were directed at Congress, for their abject failure to do their jobs. But due to the media’s focus on the executive, the president takes the blame, not the legislators who are actually responsible for the shitshow.

This election is really going to be just a referendum on Trump. If enough people are unconcerned by or supportive of his bigotry and willingness to dismantle democracy for personal gain, that’s what we’re getting. I don’t think that the D candidate matters much.

In a plurality-winner election, which means essentially nothing. FPTP only really returns a valid result when there are no more than two candidates. In my opinion, the primaries are entirely illegitimate due to the choice of voting system.
