The jailbusters quickly find that their hero is a horrid snob that, even in a life-or-death situation, cannot conceal their contempt for their rescuers. The rescuers become split between the hard believers and those realising their idol is an arsehole, in contrast to the media image they were sold.

Group Theory's notation of symmetry turns out to be useful for spectroscopy that looks at vibrational and rotational properties; molecules with particular symmetries tend to produce distinct patterns, so you can use Group Theory to deduce molecular structures. (Cue screaming mathematicians)

This reminds me of a course I took at university about a real-world application for an area of pure maths. The lecturer claimed it annoyed mathematicians, and he was probably right.
It was about an area of Group Theory that's concerned with classes of symmetry:
