Nobody loves that Joe Biden is 81. It would be great if he was 35. But you know what I really dislike? Authoritarianism. So I humbly beseech people to get a goddamn grip.

That argument for Biden, that he is not-Trump, holds for EVERY candidate the Democrats could put at the top of their ticket.
Except that any other Democrat would have the additional advantage that they are both not-Trump AND not-Biden

Nobody likes that the person who is currently the best hope at stopping full blow authoritarianism could barely make a single coherent counter argument for their case.
I'm going to vote for Biden. But I'd like him to do or say something, anything at all really, that would give people confidence that he has a plan to help with any of this, or that he even has any desire to do so, and preaching at people who expect better than this right here is not helping.
The view from the UK: Trump is an unhealthy, half-gaga old man. The Democrats are running a candidate who makes Trump look energised, young and vital. This has been clear for a long time.

The Democrats need to get a grip. This old man cannot possibly be the best they can do. The world is on a precipice. Putin is busily at war (hybrid and otherwise) and the best that the most powerful country on earth can do is to put up an old man to fight back. Absolutely pathetic and irresponsible.

We want him to step aside precisely because we ARE worried about authoritarianism and Biden is running a losing campaign with no clear path to change the dynamics of the race (esp. post-debate)
I respectfully disagree. Biden is the most underrated president in modern history. Just review the Ukraine war from the pre war threats till now. He maneuvered the situation brilliantly. His biggest asset is his age. Note that all his moves are calm and thorough, which is due to years of experience.
Unfortunately, historically, Americans have always been swayed by style over substance, personality over policy. Too many care more about HOW they talk than what they say or how many lies they spew.
I wish he had taken a victory lap and announced he wouldn't seek another term. But he didn't. And unless someone knows how and who to replace him with...I think we're stuck with him.
I always liken it to choosing between a plain ass ham sandwich and a festering turd sandwich. You might want better, you might even be vegetarian, but work to make that ham sandwich better or for better sammies in the future! The other option right now is...yeah
