This from @atrupar.bsky.social on The Bad Place.

However one feels about the ultimate question on the table, the pace and frenzy with which this discourse around whether a sitting president should step aside/down because of a singular event (that embodies a larger issue) is mind-blowing.

"Amidst all the tearing of garments and vultures circling, the fact is that we’re still pretty much where we were pre-debate. There are two questions: Is Biden fit to serve? And, would Democrats benefit by forcing him off the ticket? The answers remain 'he is' and 'probably not.'"

New in PN: "Pundits like stuff to happen, and Biden stepping down would be good copy. The media wants dramatic events. Choosing to stay the course feels boring and insufficiently proactive. But sometimes the best thing to do is to follow through."

"The decision makes talking to the VP a magic shield, as POTUS is presumed to have immunity for any discussion relating to official responsibilities. So, Trump pressuring Pence to not certify the election becomes official conduct because certifying the election falls within the VP's duties."

Nobody loves that Joe Biden is 81. It would be great if he was 35. But you know what I really dislike? Authoritarianism. So I humbly beseech people to get a goddamn grip.

When Trump is rounding up people with impunity and the imprimatur of the nation’s highest court at least folks will be able to take comfort in the fact the slightly older guy is no longer president.

if President Biden declared today's Supreme Court ruling to be an assault on democracy and ordered Chief Justice John Roberts imprisoned indefinitely, would that be an "official act?"

I feel like this should go without saying but the only sane & responsible vote is November is the one that prevents Trump from taking office & finishing off American democracy. Unless something extremely surprising happens, that choice will be Joe Biden. And in any event it will be the D nominee.

New in PN: Biden isn't the first POTUS to lose a debate. But that was as bad as it gets. "The bottom line is Republicans set the bar ridiculously low for Biden, but instead of making them regret it, he reinforced the perception he’s lost his fastball."

How is Missouri harmed by the criminal charges filed against Trump in New York? Bailey has struggled to come up with a convincing answer. But right-wing media, including Sinclair, is helping him legitimize his flimsy (and still un-filed) lawsuit anyway.
