Always an experience when you unwittingly roll into a place that is a front for something and everyone working there just stares at you as the realization hits. Then you have to figure out how long to play the stupid customer game before hopefully getting out and forgetting the place exists.

In Glastonbury once, we stopped for a coffee at this place, and they seemed genuinely pissed off about having to make us coffee. Over the next 5 mins, it became clear it was a front for dealers - people dropping off money and picking up packages - and they gave off this hostile vibe until (1)

I remember trying to find the backstage entrance to a club to tell some friends of mine to have a good gig before they went on, and it actually turned out to be the entrance to a gay club called Chain Drive. Wasn't really a front for anything, but a surprising discovery for me that particular night.

As a tenant organizer in pre-gentrified Williamsburg (c. 1981) I made the mistake of going into a “candy store” in one of the bldgs I was organizing. I wondered why there were 5 men gathered around a counter with 3 sad looking 3 Musketeers bars.

Also, pretty sure I used to drink at a bar for retired mafia guys in Brooklyn. First went to watch a ball game. The door was locked so I started walking away. Someone came out and asked what I wanted, and I said A beer and baseball. They had a quick vote and let me in. Great bar!

Rode my bike past a huge drug deal once. Like, a full van full of drugs. I came in from the bike path, which they were not expecting. I just kept staring forward on my way. Didn't make eye contact with anyone. Did NOT reach for my phone. Sort of nodded to the final lookout guy.
