I find myself suspecting that in school, those who weren't bullies themselves at least sided with and supported the bullies, with the combined expectation that they'd be safe, and they'd enjoy watching people they disliked being bullied. I wonder how many still got punched for their lunch money.

I think a lot of white conservatives believe the bad things won't happen to them.... after all, they're good GOP supporters, surely they'll be kept safe! And it's reinforced when figure like Trump assure them they have the good genes, live in the good communities, have God's approval, etc.

After that, I started watching for cases in the US, and wondering when my university would close. The department didn't seem to be aware that was coming. Everyone went on spring break; a few days in, the message came not to come back.

When I got back, I sat in on some interviews; someone joked about hand shaking since I'd recently flown, and I realized they were right, although they didn't mean it. I stopped shaking hands. The next week I didn't shake my doctor's hand. She was initially surprised, then agreed it made sense.

I started obsessive watching the info coming out of Europe, particularly Italy, in maybe mid-February. That month I flew through Texas for a conference, and overheard people commenting about concern with international travel.

Since the gates have opened on bsky, I've seen more engagement, but also more Twitteresque behavior, particularly "You mentioned X, but what about Y, Z, and Q?" and of course "Liking X means HATING Y". I'm curious about the experiences of people who've been here a while.... are you muting? Blocking?
