Disappointing to see the NYT publish a lengthy story reinforcing the "Americans are bad drivers" narrative.

It's a lazy, misleading argument--one that lets road engineers, carmakers, and federal regulators avoid taking responsibility for the US road safety crisis.

8.80 isn’t that high, I think this service should 100% exist, but that accessibility on public transit is also key if we’re worried about costs. in the landlocked suburbs, you’ll always need to subsidize

"Around the country [USA], cities are throwing out their own #parking requirements – hoping to end up with less parking, more affordable housing, better transit, and walkable neighbourhoods."

ick. human powered bikes feel like the least surveilled mid range travel method, but is it negated by phones and airtags?

a lot of people in urban areas live entirely car free because FHVs exist as an option for the occasional trips. we should still cap & electrify them, require drivers to be W2’d, and levy a congestion tax where there’s a mass transit alternative.

We can easily physically squeeze a million units in, but i’m more interested in a policy roadmap tbh; how do you fight elite interests? where’s our mt laurel?

From 1978, an example of how Congress is both a) car-brained and b) hostile to DC:

The Senator who pushed the US to adopt right-on-red "as a gasoline-saving measure" bullied DC into it b/c he didn’t want to wait at traffic lights while driving from Bethesda.

Reagan and Carters deregulations of plane, bus, and trucks rly set up a lot of ppl for failure - unions, truckers with benefits, and anyone not in a private car is deprioritized. I do like the cheaper buses (got a $4 NY to philly) and a few of the companies let you gps track your bus, which is 💯

Well, it’s the core component, for sure, but the Finns— who currently are leading the way on this in the EU— deliver a wide range of targeted support to clients. Which, when all told, is still much cheaper than the US surrender.
