*Fluent, or have a good level of literacy. 1 in 6 adults in England, 7.1 million people, have very low literacy skills according to the National Literacy Trust. It reminds me of a sign by a level crossing that had some archaic language, instead of “Switch off your engine while waiting.”

Plus some info on the fine. And maybe a service design tweak so you could put something actually off-putting, like “we check this area regularly” or “we use video cameras and will track your car licence number to fine you”.

I’m just thinking of it in terms of people who might not be fully fluent in English as that’s what I have to do in my job for online content. My sign would go: “Do not leave rubbish here.”

Not to get boring on a great photo, but a) it’s not exactly plain English, I think I only learnt what fly-tipping was in my 20s when I worked for a local council b) at a glance it looks like sign FOR fly-tipping, as in “here, leave your fly tips here, next to the recycling in this space yes please.”

Through my childhood, on election nights, my dad was the man under Peter Snow’s desk putting interesting facts on notecards into his socks. That’s how it was done before Google, kids. You got a very clever ASD man with some Oxford degrees to just remember interesting constituency histories.

Fun fact, a lesser known Wong Kar Wai film is My Blueberry Nights, set in California starring Norah Jones and Jude Law. It’s kinda different. Like the difference of Lynch’s The Straight Story from the rest of his films!

I feel exactly this way about Facebook, FB Marketplace, eBay and Etsy. The notifications you actually want completely drowning in nonsense like “new from your faved shop” /“Q offered you a deal on your watched item” / “still interested in this item? Let Q know” / “Q posted in Your Mutual Group” etc

It's part of the design concept – materialising the double yellow parking lines. That in itself I'd say is quite clever. However, I agree there is enough hostile architecture around w/o accidentally adding to it. This aside, wider context of article and my post is a road turned into a green space.

‘Pre-election sensitivity period’ is the new name for ‘Purdah’ in UK gov. I’d probably just go with ‘Pre-election comms’ myself. Not sure combining ‘sensitivity’ and ‘period’ is massively thought through!
