A Roman governor, a bunch of monks, and two bishops (one dead) walk into a bar in Edessa in April 449. If you want to know what happened here is an open access article on what can we learn from the Syriac Acts of Ephesus II about late antique cities.

I’ve learned so much from John Haldon over the years, so it’s a honor to publish a chapter in his Festschrift–on reputable slaves in Visigothic laws. Happy to share a pdf of the chapter if you’re interested!

Additionally there are some musings on how were the cities of the late empire actually accessed by imperial bureaucracy and why do we underestimate their textuality. And the usual meta level of: why wider political participation made some historians think of "decline".

Publication time! Here is my latest piece on why we may just misunderstand urban politics of late antiquity. Looking at the April unrest of 449 in Edessa I'm tackling the myth of urban political decline. Plus, of course, bonus monks and deaconesses. All in OA!

It's 2024, we were supposed to have flying cars by now, and yet we continue to require both the place of publication and the publishing house in our citation styles.

In Neoplatonism, the first principle of all existence is called the One, which in Greek is “hen.” In other words, the chicken came before the egg.

Just the fact that Charles Martel had a son he called Jerome who copied the Life of St Arnulf when he was 9 makes me wonder about that family.

We all knew it but it is very evident now that twitter has ceased to be a practicable platform for academic content visibility. The platform makes it extremely difficult now to engage with this type of content.

It’s a map, a charter, and an infographic in one. The possessions of the nunnery in Sindelsberg in Alsace are ordered according to their geographic position and date of acquisition: the oldest are the closest to the plan of the monastery. AD du Haut-Rhin G 1371/1, made in 1146

German academia is a definition of a moving target: you have international experience? Why didn't you spend more time in one place at home! You've published books? What about articles? Nice articles, but another book at this stage is expected! You are doing interdisciplinarity? No, not like that!

Note how this is also a chronicle: time progresses as we move to the margins, giving us an overview of how the history of the monastery developed. It roots the nunnery simultaneously in the landscape and in time!
