i've thought for a long time about registering republican basically to vote in primaries for the least worst people, when that's an option. Unfortunately a lot of people in local elections have zero web presence and searching for info about them often turns up nothing besides "they're running"

Yeah. In Colorado now, the smart move is to register unaffiliated, because then you get both primary ballots, and can choose which ballot to send. You can’t vote on both, but when the GOP field is nuts & bananas while the Dem field is Everyone’s Fine, you can get strategic. But that’s 1 state.
