Don’t forget when picking out Valentine flowers: every part of the lily plant is DEADLY to cats. Even a few grains of pollen can be fatal. Do not mess around thinking you’ll put them in a “safe” spot - keep them out of your house. 🌸 www.fda.gov/animal-veter....
keep them out of your AREA
if they're out front you can bring the pollen in on your clothes
especially don't if neighbours have outdoor cats
i repeat! don't keep them outside your home either!!
Someone (now blocked) was insisting that you can just cut the stamens out. No. Pollen spreads - that's its whole job. There can be deposits all over the lilies. Aside from that THE WHOLE PLANT is toxic plus any water they sit in. "Curiosity killed the cat" is an enduring maxim for a reason.
Thank you for posting this - the mixed bouquet my father got for my mother today had lily flowers, and after showing them this post, the risky flowers have been removed from the home!
It's all "true" lillies too, even the native lily to my area that I accidentally bought seeds for in a moment of brain fart. It's also why, despite trying to replace large chunks of my yard with native plants, I don't buy native seed mixed. There might be native lillies in the mix.
I didn't realize daylilies were on this list! One of the hardiest and most popular landscaping flower in my parts, and actually edible for humans. Making me rethink my garden plans for my leashed yard-cat...
THANK YOU for posting this! I (the human) had forgotten and got a rose-and-lily bouquet for a friend of mine who also has cats! Just texted her - thankfully she's not home with it yet!
