I'm disgusted by just how easy it is to distract and manipulate people with racism, sexism, selfishness, and hatred.
And greed.

Hillary Clinton, Yale Law School grad, in 2016: “If we’re serious about fighting for progressive causes, we need to focus on the Court: who sits on it, how we choose them, and how much we let politics—partisan politics—dominate that process.”

One last (hopeful) note: there was a big decline in empathy among young ppl, but that trend has reversed. Now, older ppl are the least empathetic and Gen Z (yay!!) is showing an increase in compassion.
So, let's listen to them instead of arresting them.

Every one of us should be alarmed by the global decline in empathy. Without empathy, homo sapiens would have died out along with Neanderthal and apes would probably run the world.

If you think compassion is weakness, I've got reams of scientific study proving that you're wrong. If you think cruelty and exclusion are strong, you're wrong. And your view is endangering the survival of our species.

Humans endanger themselves when they murder those who might help them & when they isolate themselves. We are not at the top of the food chain. We're somewhere between pigs and anchovies. We need each other.

Speaking in evolutionary terms, Fred Rogers was a better example of a survivor than Vladimir Putin. The most powerful homo sapiens is the one that builds community through compassion and makes use of the skills and talents of others.

Homo sapiens has been on earth for a short time & it's not clear if we are a viable species right now. If we continue breaking apart the communities that protected us, losing the compassion that helped us survive... we're not going to make it.

It's ludicrous and stupid to admire independence or "lone wolves." Lone wolves die. They are much more likely to do than the animals who belong to a pack. A maverick isn't admirable. That's a term for a motherless calf.

Compassion is also a survival skill. It is crucial for the survival of our species because homo sapiens cannot make it alone. 300,000+ years of evolution has been dedicated to making us REALLY good at working together.

Empathy is not the answer. It's simply the ability to recognize someone else's emotions and identify them. To survive as a species, we must take the next step to compassion. Compassion is empathy + a desire to help. Compassion is empathy in action.

Which means empathy is not a "soft skill." Independence is a soft skill. Empathy is survival for homo sapiens. We are all born with the ability to empathize, implanted through centuries of evolution. We can strengthen that ability or weaken it.

We think it makes us weak to depend on others, not realizing that dependency has always been our survival skill. We don't all have to be great hunters or builders or cooks--we can band together and make use of a diversity of skills.

Homo sapiens survived because we have the most advanced communication & collaboration skills. If you are messing with one of us, you are probably messing with more. We build communities & that's what has protected us.

For a long time, evolutionary psychologists & biologists tried to understand how homo sapiens became the surviving human species. After all, we are fragile, slow, and easily hurt. Neanderthals were smart, creative, tough.

You’re forgiven for the Mad Max images this brings to mind, because movie tropes are what all of this is the IDF. It’s not a war; it’s the culmination of a lifetime of propaganda and playing soldier. It’s not self-defense; It’s dehumanization on a cinematic scale.
It’s comic book grotesquerie.
