Last night the House of Commons somehow passed a Lib Dem amendment that MPs arrested for serious offences should be excluded from the house. Conservative MPs today are furious - for some reason - blaming the Whips office for failing.

The resolution approving a system to restrict MPs' access to the Commons on arrest was passed without a vote.

The controversy came earlier when deciding whether restriction should apply at arrest or at charge. Arrest was decided by a single vote.

In most workplaces if you’re arrested for rape you don’t get to roll up and hang out at the coffee machine until the case has been resolved. But then an inordinate number of Conservative MPs have been questioned by the Law on rape offences in recent years…
