Sources vary, but most seem to agree that on this day 40 years ago, Minutemenâs Double Nickels On the Dime was released. I could write a book about what this album has meant to me, the many portals it has opened. How so many the values and aesthetics I treasure in art can be traced back to my (1/?)

My favorite story about this album: they had to do at least two passes for the cover photograph, because they wanted to be going exactly 55 mph as they passed the sign for the exit to San Pedro. That sort of attention to detail in the service of a giggle is a key to understanding the best art.

(3/3) at the peak of their creative powers, a collection of sh*t from an old notebook where the sh*t are nuggets of smarts, wit, good natured humor, humanity, and a whole lot more, smashed home with expert musicianship, unbelievably tight yet surprisingly supple. Happy 40 to one of the greatest!

Had totally forgotten that Al MacDowell, probably best known for his stint with Ornette Coleman in the 80s and 90s, also played with James Chance at the very start of his career around 1980.
