it SO IS - and the ears šŸ˜† I had repeatedly gone outside, looking like we were leaving, then remembering things I had to go back inside for. This was the third time.

Shedding a few tears at the final Newshub 6pm show.
So many good journos, great stories.
Hillary Barry crying when she was anchoring the Chch quake coverage.
So many moments. Not all of them great, but we do need news competition: part of a healthy democracy
So gutted for them all

there's no "coming back" for seabed mining: it's never been here. That's the point. Untried, untested... potentially highly polluting, not done anywhere else

OMG so covid is driving school attendance down so the answer to that is to tell people to send their kids to school while still sick? The logic of this completely fails me

Extreme heat and humidity led to the tragic deaths of over 1,300 Hajj pilgrims this year. For the Hajj to remain physically possible during summer, we must adopt effective adaptation measures and move away from fossil fuels, writes Dr Fahad Saeed in our latest blog.

I remember when I worked for Geoffrey Palmer there was a huge hoo ha about him taking the date for Te Tiriti claims back from 1975 to 1840, and the subsequent negotiations for a Māori Fisheries agreement (with Shane Jones as his advisor!). The racists were out in full force.

If we win, we'll again bow to pressure fm farmers, our biggest polluters. We'll introduce climate laws & roll them back as the next election approaches. We'll again put the climate portfolio outside Cabinet, ensuring its low priority. But don't worry, we'll continue payouts for storm & droughts.

exactly! this is what he said. "Given that this work involves large heavy machinery, an open trench, and is also well used by Ashburton College, domain users and a rest home, the thorough safety measures to protect the public and the construction are appropriate and necessary."

Meet the Govtā€™s ā€˜independentā€™ fast-track consenting advisors, their connections, interests and knowledge gaps These are the people who advise on whether mining projects on conservation land should proceed but none have a nature focus. Conflicts of interest are hidden from the public, of course.

Meaning New Zealand National Party flushed value for money down the loo and now will give us a product half the size for double the price which seems to be National and the Kiwi Way. So much for economic literacy from the Party of Business.

Itā€™s a relatively new dish, probs installed with this faulty new part that has to be frequently replaced. The guy was very clear abt that being the issue, as it was last time. As I said, replacing them is almost the only thing heā€™s doing: his van is full of them. Ridiculous

For someone who works on climate, and lives in a community wrecked by Gabrielle, Chippy's climate policy bonfire was the last straw. Also Jacinda's refused to contemplate a CGT (& Chippy's similar vow). They'd lost touch with their base, trying to keep the new 2030 centre-right voters. Big fail.

My sky dish's signal stopped.
Bloke turned up today to replace the part he replaced last September. Says they only last about 6 months so mine had done well.
He spends all day doing this task, replacing this part sky is sourcing from a new manufacturer.
You'd think they'd twig, right?

I left after Labour got trashed in the 1990 elections. Went to work for Greenpeace international in London, and ended up going to all the negotiations in leadup to the climate convention being agreed. Didn't go to Rio, weirdly.

"Keep Calm & Carry On essentially amounted to ā€œI know youā€™re about to die, but thereā€™s no need to make a scene.
But if Britain can extricate itself from the party whose unremitting cruelty has stained the last decade and a half of British life,ā€ he concluded, ā€œthat does deserve to be marked.ā€

I was his "environment press secretary" - the RMA, ozone depletion, his climate stuff. I got to travel to international climate meetings way back in the late 80's. I was the only press secy remaining after Palmer got rolled as he was allowed to keep that portfolio. Those last six weeks were weird.

Consent by brute force?
Wannabe seabed miners tell The Listener they're threatening to sue the government if they don't get fast-track consent to trash the ocean
Srsly, after 3 courts threw out the consent? Fat chance
But the belligerence is real
Big fat red flags here for the government šŸš©šŸš©šŸš©

blog from me:
ā€œIf you have to destroy the South Taranaki Bight, home to pygmy blue whales and kororā, to get a mineral like vanadium for ā€˜critical mineralsā€™Ā  then youā€™re doing it wrong. Trashing the environment to tackle the climate crisis is not a solution.ā€
