The idea parents can be terrible is so under talked about it. It's why politicians can say they will out LGBT kids to their parents for "safety reasons" with a straight face

i think also though parents being terrible i.e. authoritarian is not seen as a bad thing. the political consensus is that parents SHOULD be able to control your gender expression and behaviour because again, a child is not seen as a person but the property of an adult

My wife would always get people telling her "Oh of course your parents love you" to refute her abuse and neglect. It was infuriating to me who knew her story. This assumption that all parents are loving and not only loving, but good parents, is deranged. Just take a look around at the awful parents!

I think it has been a big factor in this culture war in general. Those that endorse and subscribe to these authoritarian models suddenly realising how many people are challenging them.
