Many were complacent in 2016 & believed that no matter what 34-felon did there was no way anything "bad" would happen because the most recent "bad" was way back in the '60's. 2016 on was "same/same" until the pandemic & "bad" happened. Now, many are ok with replacing "bad" memories with fantasy.

I think Trump benefits from COVID's weird effects on societal memory (tho less so among online political obsessives). We do a terrible job of remembering the pandemic, and also any weirdness and failure gets blamed on the virus, as if Trump hadn't been personally responsible for so very much of it.
