Friend posted a great PSA about why dogs with short muzzles are more at risk of overheating than dogs with long muzzles, even if they have short fur and big mouths. Passing it on because I think a lot of people don’t understand how panting cools a dog down and forget to give them extra attention
Tbh I’m not interested in shaming people who own these dogs because I don’t think anyone following me is breeding these dogs or buying $20,000 French Bulldogs. The fact its these dogs exist, they’re in shelters, they need loving homes and conscientious owners who will be aware of their needs.
We had two boxers in our family. The first one was not well bred and had an extremely brachycephalic muzzle. She struggled a LOT in heat and with breathing. Our second was a well bred american/german line cross who had much more 'snout', and had far less, to no issue with breathing and less w heat!
I have a bulldog who can, on occasion, work himself into an overheated dither. On one such occasion, I used the same cool-down techniques I learned in human heat exhaustion first aid including cool, damp cloths under his equivalent arm pits and groin.
just a protip for folks paying attention, cool packs, ice packs, and ad-hoc ones using a couple of ziplocs (one inside the other so it doesn't leak) and icecubes will help your pupper stay cool in the heat. in lieu of the kiddy pool, etc if you don't have the space, naturally.
