The “can’t build proper nests because we bred their instinct out of them” thing is kind of an urban legend, even wild, undomesticated, ancestral Rock doves in their native habitat just throw in a couple sticks and call it a day, it’s just that in their natural habitat they nest in holes like this

we left a box on our deck that had rolled up xmas lights in it by accident once and the pigeons just kinda threw 3 sticks on it and boom. it was already nest shaped so it was fine lol but oh boy they ruined those lights

Nah I am pretty sure they build terrible nests because they're a bunch of clout chasers knowing about how many upvotes they'll get on reddit

I keep trying to tell people, it's so frustrating. (I'm "the bird guy" at work so this comes up a surprising amount.)

There are populations of completely wild pigeons left! More than scientists expected, even, but they’re pretty rare and arguably endangered because it’s so difficult to tell the difference between a wild rock dove and a hybridized rock dove without a dna test m.jpost.com/science/arti...

Their natural characteristics made them easy to domesticate. They are kinda crappy nesters, and people would steal the chicks, pigeon just lays another egg on its' pile of sticks.

Never really took that to heart, seems like an extinction event if they just didn’t nest at all.

I don’t remember what video I watched but they were like, pigeons could make more substantial nests if the environment requires it, but for cliffs and buildings, it doesn’t doesn’t make sense for them to use the energy to build it when they could use it more toward caring for the eggs.
