I'm 5'7, but my husband and son are both HUGE and it makes me feel unreasonably small. I also somehow ended up with giant cats. That didn't contribute to my complex until one stood and stretched up to me and his paws REACHED THE MIDDLE OF MY BACK. Anyway, I'm 3 apples tall.

This is important news. It clearly sets an expectation that employers will care for staff who face threats as part of their jobs, and it explicitly calls out how cruel it was for Auckland University to effectively punish Wiles for her own harassment.

Your piece got me thinking about equivalents... eg if Destiny was threatening Rotary meetings or Remuera bridge club meetings or a drink at the golf course, to the point safety couldn't be guaranteed and they were cancelled, what would be the blowback?

This is so good; thank you for laying this all out in black and white with such a clear pattern of escalation. Something I can't stop thinking about is how throwing a bottle of juice on someone is worthy of continued Police prosecution, but storming events and threatening to kill people isn't.

I guess it could feel weird that this is clearly years old and yet it’s coming up now. But it turns out that if you push for a bunch of policies that are deeply unpopular with young people you used to message with, they’re going to bring up the other times you had poor judgement.

I genuinely think young people and politicians should be messaging directly and often. But disappearing messages is inherently a stupid format for any older random man to communicate with minors, and anyone demanding blind trust in that regard is not grounded in reality.

We need to stop speaking in a passive tone about the consequences of knowingly false information put out by elected officials. When a political platform targets and misrepresents something, the KNOWN impact will be increased, directed abuse at that target.

Christopher Luxon and Winston Peters had the opportunity to mitigate some of that purposeful harm done by their coalition partner, perhaps by simply saying that dedicated campus spaces have always existed. Instead, they continued the inflammatory lie that this was segregation.

The ACT Party’s decision to bully a university on social media for having a dedicated space on campus for Māori and Pacifica students, resulted in those students and staff receiving death threats.

Trolling + misinformation requires an audience: so when rather than responding, I simply block, they also perceive that as censorship. This latest accusation, for example, claims that, as a university professor, I am a public official and hence shouldn’t be allowed to block anyone on social media.

I say this as someone who was raised Christian and spent 13 years in near daily religious education: not thinking through, or ignoring, any uncomfortable conclusions from what’s clearly laid out in the Bible, seems to be a main tenant of Christianity.

imo the key benefit and sales pitch of deplatforming is that if you don't want a network of people conducting a particular behavior on your platform, the best solution is to kick them off of your platform. Getting bogged down in analysis of whether those behaviors have 'impact' is a policy dodge
