A fabric with an enormous pattern repeat would have been made specifically for Worth and perhaps woven Ć la disposition, with the dimensions of the final garment in mind, a popular technique for the House of Worth, and famously seen on the butterfly dress

The pattern is reminiscent of Italian Renaissance textiles of the late 15th to mid 16th century, and is a vegetal type inspired by what were called pomegranate, artichoke, or pinecone motifs.

The dress and fabric were designed by Jean-Phillippe Worth, son of the famous Charles Frederick Worth. This type of fabric is called a cisele velvet, or cut velvet. The silk velvet pile - the plush part - is blue, while the backing fabric - or ground - is green silk satin.

In addition to a looser silhouette, you can also identify tea gowns by their āall in oneā construction rather than a separate skirt and bodice. The high neckline and heavier fabrics identify this as a gown that would been worn late in the day.

Later Post says, "One would wear a tea-gown in one's own house in receiving a guest to whose house one would wear a dinner dress.ā And, as āyour tea-gowns, since they are never worn in public, can literally be as bizarre as you pleaseā¦ā

Etiquette author Emily Post talks about tea gowns, calling them "a hybrid between a wrapper and a ball dress...made of rather gorgeous materials." And says they're āapt to be more elaborate and gorgeous... than half of the garments that masquerade these days as evening dresses!ā

While this might look like the kind of evening dress that would be worn to the fanciest of balls, it was actually a type of house dress or robe dāintĆ©rieur appropriate for company and receiving visitors. Tea gowns were a favored garment of Gilded Age ladies.

Countess Greffulhe herself was more or less a typical French socialite. Fabulously wealthy, a great beauty of her day, patron of the arts, etc etc. However, where she truly stood apart was in her dress. Her fashion sense was astonishing, even among her contemporaries.

I got my grades back, which means I can officially say goodbye to the semester, and I've gotten a lot of new followers lately, so it seems like a great day to talk about one of my most favorite historical garments of all time: Countess Greffulheās tea gown.

Met Gala Monday is coming up and the dress code is āGarden of Timeā while the theme for the exhibit is āSleeping Beauties.ā Were I going, I think my dream dress would be this piece from Guo Pei Haute Couture A/W 2018.

I think a lot about how Cora Harrington said that so much consumption is just based on the rest of us cosplaying as rich, and when you accept that nothing you buy will ever give you "quiet luxury" vibes or whatever it is freeing to buy what you like and to buy less.

Iām watching the Amazing Spider-Man 2 for the first time on Netflix and the best thing about this movie is it sets up Jamie Foxx for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Otherwise, itās a bit like watching asphalt dry.

What do you think of the robe de style making a comeback? Itās been consistently appearing on runways since at least 2022, and todayās Simone Rocha for Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture SS24 show featured several. This dropped waist with panniers silhouette was very popular in the 1920s. Thoughts?

My husband, who plays D&D and never rewatches movies, loved it so much he watched it a second time with me. I donāt get all the in-game references, but it was surprisingly fun. Also, I agree about Michelleās character.
