I just finished The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by @samitbasu.bsky.social -- it's such a joyful, imaginative book. Enjoyed every line.

Croissants are a nerd's baking dream. You need a caliper and a ruler. There's an exponential growth process involved. Hours of waiting time you can spend writing code. Amazing.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

It's not only a complete misunderstanding of the process of discovery but also a misuse of statistical inference as well. Confirmatory research should be rare and reserved for later stages of scientific inquiry in areas where sufficient progress has been made to specify proper hypotheses.

Most hypotheses in social sciences do not qualify as scientific or statistical hypotheses of import. We pretend to do confirmatory research in early stages of scientific inquiry skipping exploration & theoretical and measurement refinement. NHST does not magically turn speculation into discovery.

While I don't think the dominant view is gonna change any time soon, I hope sometime in the future the scientific community will clearly assess just how much hypothesis-(testing-)centric scientific process will have held certain fields back and re-prioritize observation, description, & exploration.

The correct measure of the severity of the political situation in France is: the left has stopped arguing. When the leftists, all the leftists, say "we'll argue later, we gotta do something about this right now", shit's getting REAL real.

One thing that I think Jedi: Fallen Order did much better than Jedi: Survivor was giving you a sense of your interactions with the environment, and by extension, the world. It had superior level dasein.

Perhaps the best thing one gets from higher education is understanding that a lot of questions don't have clear answers, and a lot of problems lack clear solutions. It follows that those who are trying to dismantle higher ed gain power by providing wrong answers and fake solutions.

Definitely! And I usually solve it by not actively working to solve it. Doing repetitive/non-creative work for a while works well. When it doesn't, it's a good sign that it might be time to schedule a little therapy session.
