(I would also never criticize, e.g., someone who is pregnant or might get pregnant for moving away from a state that criminalizes abortion. But I think it's callous and shortsighted to simply write off states that do this and the people who live there.)

Yes. I'm chiefly criticizing people who loudly disparage and dismiss large swaths of the country without showing any sense of understanding of or sympathy for the good people who live there.

Absolutely. It is entirely different to be forced to leave a place because you are personally vulnerable and persecuted vs. evangelizing for abandoning others out of convenience from a position of relative strength.

Wasnât going to wade into discourse on here again yet but let me just say, the jokes and threats (or whatever they are) from U.S. folks of relative privilege about leaving the country give away a lot of how people locate themselves, or rather donât, in relation to neighbors and community.

That's before you even get to the political-tactical foolishness of writing off the substantial population of left-leaning people in every place that might form the basis of a future majority!

It's the most hollow, selfish sort of individualism that presumes that all the people and places around you are fungible and that you have no obligations to anyone but your nuclear family and that no one else should either.

Absolutely, and the same arguments (and underlying psychology) apply to all the people casually arguing for people to flee "red states" for "blue states"

Penguin feather muff and collarette set, ca. 1870-1900.
Several New Zealand-based 'feather furriers' specialised in the pelts of seabirds, including James Constantine, a Dunedin taxidermist, and the Liardets, who ran a feather furriery in Wellington.

Since we're sharing, I have a soft spot for my 1837 "hard-times token"âor, as one coin-collecting site calls them, "the original meme." Minted privately during a depression, they convey a happy mix of humor and spite. The tortoise is the US economy, the jackass Andrew Jackson.
