I was doing family tree research for a friend, and Taylor's Mistake featured heavily as the scene of a big insurance fraud, including a relocated dead body... (back in the 1880s) and I always thought the beach's name made it sound more like a Midsomer Murders episode or something. :)

So, in the 3 months Jan-Mar this year, the New Zealand commercial fisheries have killed 6 Hector's dolphins, 160 albatrosses 24 fur seals; 42 petrels; 38 shearwaters; 2 yellow-eyed penguins; and 2 baleen whales. (that we know about, with only a small amount of the onboard footage being reviewed)

But seriously though, really quite a thing to unseal the "unlimited executive powers" box BEFORE your guy takes executive power, with the understanding that he'll just keep it warm until your guy takes office and then uses it to destroy him/everyone.

We've got a Roger Walker treehouse-ish dwelling just down the street from us. We always stop and look for it when we walk past (it's mostly behind trees, and last time we stopped, the owner was outside and he was telling us how much he liked living there) (in Masterton)

Secondary tax is simply your marginal rate that you'd be paying if it was all part of your primary job, I thought? I'm unclear how that is 'means testing'. Perhaps I'm missing something.

That was my thought too, but I read the actual report and the numbers came from 2 different places. I thought they meant 1.7% of the 56% but it's 1.7% of the 13.2% absence (on a time basis) of which 5.1% is due to sickness, and 1.7% is known to be truancy). Still bad, but not as dire. (pdf v)

Any historians? In an obit from 1784: "Mr Edward Weatherley, near Ravensworth Castle, who had lived under that family 65 years; ... " (Newcastle area, England) Does "lived under that family" (presumably the Liddell family of Ravensworth) mean that he worked for them? Or more personal?

Was quite pleased today to see 4 different (and not usually seen) birds on our local pond! An Australian Coot, two NZ Shoveler ducks, 2 black shags, and a NZ grebe (aka dabchick). That last one has an estimated population of only 2000, so we feel quite lucky to have seen one. #nz #birds

TIL they have online shopping. Our closest Kmart is about 2 hours away, so I rarely shop there. If it's good online, I'll check it out!
