You might think this story isn’t applicable to you because you’re not in New York, but it’s important because it illustrates our basic problem: Every issue you care about is held hostage by a ruling class that is incapable of doing the right thing because it might make some suburban cops mad
What I don't understand is, if this was a sticking point, why not just exempt the cops and other civil servants? I don't love it as a solution, but it's preferable to whatever the hell this was
Agree with your premise and New Yorkers suck at voting. If their is a fool on the ballot that person will win. I'm sure there are exceptions - AOC please raise your hand - but so few and so far.
Seems like there’s a Coasian solution here…give the public employees a raise equivalent to the tax…give them a tax credit equivalent to the tax…some kind of housing allowance equivalent to the tax…or incentivize them to live in the city…any of those would be cheaper than not having the tax itself…
Its true... I still remember all the times that police departments went and took hostage the pets and even family members of politicians for blackmailing said politicians over the past 7 years. Ever since Trump became President they became emboldened to be the most corrupt they can be.
Absolutely. It also matters to non-NYers because other municipalities may be influenced to kill or enact their own congestion pricing plans, based on what NY does & how well it ultimately works. NYC is supposed to lead, so smaller cities can adopt our successes & make them their own.
Wow this really touched a nerve huh? Follow @thewaroncars.bsky.social and @marisakabas.bsky.social they do the actual work. I’ve got nothing to promote other than “Support your local library” and watch South Side on Max it’s great
Same in Philadelphia. All the cops live in either the far Northeast or far Northwest (Roxborough) where the only viable option to get to center city is…you guessed it…driving.
Having an honest billionaire Governor helps us avoid this shit in Illinois for the most part. Pritzker would tell these people to pound sand like he's doing with the Chicago Bears who want taxpayer money to build a new stadium.
Yes, and almost all cops are suburban cops. In Minneapolis i think something like 5% of the force resides in the city... one of many giant problems with MPD.
