It really is making *me* feel crazy to see a bunch of other Democrat voters running around screaming about how Biden is now unelectable, on the basis of one bad debate and an incredibly obvious ratfucking campaign by America’s most craven newspaper.
That's supposes that my decision to call him on electrical is based on one debate performance, which it isn't.
I thought he was cognitively unfit to serve when we elected him the first time.
All of those screaming will point fingers at others if Biden does step out of the race and it all goes to hell, they will never accept responsibility for their part in it.
that's exactly what's happening. I know of THREE people saying "wait a couple of weeks, y'all" - Josh Marshall, and the guys at electoral-vote.com, V. and Z.
If you think this is "just one bad debate" then I'm sorry, but you have entirely misread the people you're criticizing. Instead of trying—and failing—to address their concerns by hand-waving them away as a hysterical overreaction, consider what they're actually saying and respond to that.
I’m simultaneously of the mind “Man he was always like this, why are you worried about it now?” and “Hell yes, replace him, do it, get rid of the fuck.”
Me too, in no small part because the openly fascist felon promising to use the power of the presidency to wreak vengeance on his personal enemies *should* be beatable by a syphilitic gerbil. If Biden is "unelectable", that's because dem voters are stupid and selfish, not because Biden is old.
I don't read the NYT. We saw what we saw. Denial will backfire terribly when he does it again, and bet on it. It will happen. When it does, THEN it will be too late.
I'll still vote for him, but like my opinion, it's inconsequential.
A bad debate where he seemed cognitively incapable of holding office. The response has been crazy, but let’s not act like it was just Nixon looking uncomfortable up there.
It's not like he's an *actual* dictator either. Sure he wields considerable power but also he's surrounded himself by a bunch of sensible, capable, people who aren't in need of a few extra minutes sleep in the morning.
Unlike the other guy. Who is a clear and present danger to the entire world.
The bad debate is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Those problems have been seen and discussed long before now. For those of us in California, it's especially irritating because we went through this recently with Diane Feinstein.
Never liked the NYT so I have no feels about that.
I totally get that you are talking about these past few days alone and this particular narrative of decline, but I think lots of us who hate him for enabling the genocide in Gaza were kinda waiting for this moment?
I'm starting to think everyone in media got together & said "wouldn't it be funny if absolutely no one voted?! Wanna try it!?!?!?"
"Omg, we're actually doing this!!"
The MSM has been in the tank for Trump since 2016. Biden’s getting the same treatment they gave Hillary after she stumbled backwards & fell at a 9/11 memorial event because she had pneumonia.
I am just Some Guy but it definitely has compelled me to get way more vocally supportive of Biden in defense, just because of how obvious it is that this is ratfuckery from the bad guys and their painfully stupid patsies in the press
Yes. I'm thinking maybe time to take my own advice, stop arguing with any of these people and get to work spreading the word about THIS IS NOT A DRILL THESE PEOPLE JUST LITERALLY DECLARED WAR VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRAT EVEN IF THEY ARE LITERALLY DEAD (and they aren't, and did good work)
It was a lot more than a bad debate. It felt cruel to watch. It was a painful display of human frailty and decline. Also v notable that since then Biden has not done the things an active campaigner would do to move past the news cycle like doing a series of unscripted interviews and town halls
But the swing voters and the young voters and the Black voters that concern me are NOT avid NYT readers. They are judging on what they saw and on material specifics in their lives.
It’s kind of annoying to see people who already didn’t like Biden at all saying THIS is now the reason why he needs to drop out like come on if you said he should drop out over inflation or Gaza or Afghanistan or climate policy or etc etc etc it’s a little pretextual now
What drives me bonkers is people insisting this isn't about the candidates, it's bigger than that, it's about the fate of the country, indeed, the fate of the world. It's fascism versus democracy.
Then they turn around and tell everybody the candidate standing for democracy is old and feeble.
SNL vilified Reagan & his age for months. It became a running joke. TV news & newspapers made fun of him as well. Then he went out & took 49 of 50 states.
It's so breathtakingly shortsighted. I could understand it from the Post. Bezos doesn't have to care.
But Sulzberger is a mere multimillionaire. People he cares about will be harmed by the Trump Principate he's working to create.
He's even at risk himself.
It's amazing to me that professional political operatives who think the forces that can take out an incumbent president would be totally cool with whatever greasy pole climbing pick-me who pops up and not similarly obliterate them
If you completely ignore that corner of it, you'll find an insane number of people under the age of 30 saying Harris has it and would be easy for them to evangelize to their peers. I don't trust the media to get better, but some crises deserve exploitation and not a boycott
Hey, hey, hey! The Washington Post is very annoyed that you're leaving them out - they've jumped into the ratfucking just as thoroughly as the NY Times.
(Unless you meant them, of course, in which case the NYT is EVEN MORE annoyed at being left out.)
It's freaking sick. The 🍊🤡 is a felon 34x over, but 1 bad day, and alleged dems go bonkers. Of course folks went ape shit when Pres Obama drank Pepsi & wore a Tan Suit. I'll never understand these politicians.
I'm Not An American but he wouldn't have been my first choice in the 2020 primary, he wouldn't even have been my *fourth* choice, and this shit is still making my blood boil
Like I said elsewhere, if this had gone the other way, there would be stories saying, "Trump's awful debate is bad news for Biden."
At some point we need to at least try to play the game.
The way the panic is spreading (and is being obsessively reinforced by the Times) reminds me of the run-up to the Iraq War. People very quickly deciding "this is a CRISIS that demands one specific response," and brushing off talk of complications or consequences.
I swear, people are entirely out of cope
It’s like they finally realized the magnitude of the problems we’re facing, but their unrelenting belief that the answer is to rely entirely upon a single person to fix them has left them completely wild now that such a magical savior is no longer in sight
If people sincerely think Biden is at risk of losing there’s no value in “I told you so” screamed in a gulag.
Any actual concerns should lead immediately to “so fuck any negative reporting or discussion about him, it’s game time” not “well ackshually I predict he’ll lose now”
The thing I keep thinking about is the fact that the people who will decide the election probably don't even realize there is a presidential election this year.
It’s fun because they’re all like “let’s look at the evidence” when there’s an argument the could possibly in one interpretation of the evidence be right.
And, now, when most of the evidence suggests they are wrong, they ignore it.
I think there are honest good faith people who want to have a discussion before a full nomination and will still support him 110% if he’s the guy.
The New York time got their feelings hurt and are 1000% fucking
It's been a right wing narrative since 2021 and because of this debate they're going full speed with it. It's literally just an extension of Trump calling him sleepy and we're playing into it.
I'll be the first to admit, I don't like Biden. I called him Republican 'Lite' for a long time. Still don't like him. But I will still vote for him, without any hesitation, just to help make sure the orange conman doesn't step foot back into that office.
I think multiple things can be true. Biden’s debate performance & more importantly his subsequent lack of response to it are problematic. The basic calculus for my personal vote is obviously unchanged. Not everyone is doing the same math. The consequences for failure are existential. It’s not great.
Same but seeing dems like Pelosi and Doggett lay into him has unfortunately created a new reality that he has to refute.
It’s an absurd, self-inflicted problem for Democrats, but if you stab yourself you can still bleed to death.
Biden and his senior team said they accepted the grim ultimatum they’ve been hearing from almost all quarters of the Democratic Party — to demonstrate his fitness for office or face a significant effort to force him to step aside. prada.substack.com/p/hours-befo...
I trust the newspaper that ran like 30 stories on Claudine Gay to have a rational understanding of how to cover the news, and what level of importance to give every story.
Some day, some glorious, beautiful day, Democratic officials will realize that the establishment press are not their friends, and just because their dear Republican friends have been hollering about "librul bias" for an especially long time, that doesn't mean it isn't another one of their lies.
I feel like treating Biden’s quite obvious and visible cognitive decline as a ratfuck and not something 80% of Americans and many members of Congress agree upon and are concerned about is equally weird! Reasonable people can disagree about the underlying reality, but there is not escaping the q.
