- Labour's vote spread was way more efficient than under Corbyn. Brilliant groundgame
- Tory vote was cannibilized by Reform
- soft tories stayed at home, unlike with Corbyn
- Labour will need to win back the votes lost due to terrible trans and gaza policies
ALL THESE THINGS CAN BE TRUE AT ONCE

Thing is, if he was asked, Capaldi would have materialised the Tardis in any social function you asked for (complete with the Pope), because it'd be polite. Smith might do it as well, but it'd be all about himself. Tennant (mk1) wouldn't and would hate themselves for not doing it. Capaldi rules!

I'm imagining Penny later "So I met this cute girl and we went back to her place and I thought, she's kind, maybe try it out? And then theirs this grinding sound and the Pope storms in and starts shouting in Italian! No really, I swear!". Being on the wake of the doctor's presence must be troubling

If you'll pardon an observation from this far end of the world, RefUk seems very like OneNation down this way. In both cases just policies based on hate and fear, especially on asylum seekers who "must be, and we will stop" with no details how. They're a political cancer to be excised.

Yeah, it's completely over the top. And points out that if you let the Doctor into your life then stuff like this is going to happen and all you can do is deal with it. If memory serves the lass that Bill bought home was implied to be a lapsed Catholic as well, or am I wrong? I could be.

And a sign that this twist would not necessarily be better legally or politically, but oh it would be better in profits. And ultimately in the battle between truth and profits, well, profits are more profitable.

It's an ancient name going back millennia, but yeah for a modern kid, it's basically "Hi, we've given you a name that's going to get you picked on for most of your life." Not my first choice is all I'm saying.

I'm thinking of the moment when David as the doctor looks at a self obsessed billionaire and says "It's been a long time since anyone said 'no' to you, hasn't it?". Just seems relevant somehow.

British politics still has a sense of the absurd about it. I mourn that for all we former colonies took from them politically, we failed to recognise this as an important part. And so we all forgot that an important part of maintaining democracy was having a system that allowed you to openly mock it

For realms that were 'forgotten', there seems to be an inordinate amount of documentation, maps, stories, legends, and lore. Just saying... 😄

The Great smog of London (1952) outright killed 10,000-12,000 people and left about 100,000 ill. It happened again in 1956 (1,000 dead), 1957 (750 dead), 1959 (over 200 dead), and 1962 (300-700 dead). And in all cases the industrial polluters got off scot free. We never learn.

The Murdoch press in Australia has been known to support Labor on rare occasions. Because the only thing they hate more than "lefties" is backing a loser.

I just rewatched that very episode. I read both those stories when they were released so many years ago, and steeled myself that the live action versions would be a lesser beast. I have never been happier to be totally utterly wrong.

Why does the wizarding populous keep themselves hidden? Why don't they show magic to the rest of the world and take control? The only thing stopping them from wiping out us "muggles" if we dissent would be their own rules (which could be easily changed as is shown in the books).

No it doesn't. Whatever accolades you may want to bestow on her, "historically accurate worldbuilding" is one I would have to decline to promote (amongst others).

They had to have some sort of transfer with the real economy, or Hermione's school fees couldn't have been paid. Honestly, worse economy than Skyrim.
And it's ok to call a normal a Muggle, but calling a wizard a Mudblood is rude. It's ok to be exclusionary provided it's outside your group.

And the wizard world's financial system (which is somehow based on the gold standard), is managed by a race of short skinny hunched over beings who are secretive, obsessed with finance, and somewhat unpleasant. Oh, and they have long hooked noses just in case you hadn't gotten the stereotype yet.

What I'm wondering, is what's stopping our high court from going down this path (apart from some legalistic principles and a basic sense of decency). Yes the the High Court of Australia Act 1979 restrains it, but not in any ways that couldn't be [possibly] overcome. Fun times my friend, fun times.

It is indeed. It reminds me of Hunter. S. Thompson's final wish to be cremated and his ashes fired out of a cannon on his property. It's a final statement about who you are and what you truly believed. And in both cases if there is anything beyond this, they both would have enjoyed the spectacle.

I feel the same way about Douglas Adams, Ursula. K. LeGuin, amongst others. There's a sense of finality that you've outlived their output. Maybe that's why the Tolkien Estate published every note they could find about Middle Earth so the fans could have more (or maybe because it made them a fortune)

Alas, you're both right. At my age (mid '60s) I've seen as many young self righteous prigs as old bitter self -centred fools. In both cases the majority of them were jealous that others could still find and respond to a joy they'd forgotten how to recognise let alone respond too.

I get this. If I choose to buy a SFF novel of lurid pulpy prose, I want to know that some of that purchase price went to an actual writer, rather than to pay the power bill of a machine that places words after each other by statistics.
