I'm curious how many African-American actors and behind the scenes crew would cite Eddie Murphy as the reason they got their break in Hollywood. I suspect it would be a lot.

I feel like Eddie Murphy must have been a potent agent of change in Hollywood during the 80s and 90s. A black star needs other black actors to play his family, black stunt performers to double him, hair and makeup stylists who understand their hair and complexion, etc.

It makes sense, I suppose. In a lot of ways, Eddie Murphy was a trailblazer in Hollywood, a black man being the marquee name on a mainstream features film, rather than B-movies or exploitation. Big stunt houses would not have been used to doubling for black actors in heroic roles all that often.

In the famous scene early in the film where Axel Foley is thrown through a window, a modern TV reveals that the stunt performer is wearing a caucasian-type wig, dyed black and in a puffy flat-top style to simulate African curls during the fraction of a second it's visible on screen.

4K video is not kind to 20th century stunt work. Wigs and costuming that could pass fine on lower resolution displays don't hold up to 4K HDR and the ability to rewind and pause. This is how I learned that on Beverley Hills Cop they didn't have any proper Afro wigs for their stunt performers.
